Episode 82: Behind the Scenes with Angela Wolf
Let’s talk fancy pants! Experiment painting flowers with string painting. There have been so many videos on this, I just had to try and it turned out awesome, at least in most cases. Oh boy, this became a mess! The paper painting is beautiful, in fact many of you on facebook live mentioned I should save these papers and use them as thank you cards. What a great idea!!!
I am using TSUKINEO INC All-purpose ink. In fact, I bought this ink years ago and you might remember a past episode of behind the scenes where we used shaving cream to dye fabrics.
Next, I experimented with string painting on different fabrics. I started with a dark denim cut out into the Kate Skirt Pattern, and used a yellow, green, and red fabric paint. The result was less than exciting, in fact you couldn’t see the color at all! I think it is the dark colored fabric and the cotton factor, which sucks up the dye. I then tried a cream colored stretch twill. Again the color is soaked up and not as decorative and fluid as the paper. Winn suggested using a satin or polyester fabric that won’t soak up the ink. Great idea! I used a silver colored polyester satin fabric and it turned out beautiful! I am thinking metallic paint would look fabulous on the denim, I will keep you posted.
Designing a Curved Hem
Have you seen the cute curved hem on the side of pants and jeans? Super cute and easy to design. I show how to alter a pattern and alter ready-to-wear to achieve this stylish look. In general:
- draw the new curve hemline
- add a 1/4″ seam allowance
- make a facing for the front leg and the back leg
After you attach the facing you have a few different options for keeping the facing in place. For thicker fabrics, simply tacking the facing to the inseam and outside leg seam should do the trick. Otherwise consider top-stitching or hand stitch a blind hem, as I did on this pair of blue pants.

Great class for beginners or advanced!! I’ve been sewing for a very long time, but have always avoided knits. This class takes the fear out of sewing with knits. Loved all the tips for sewing with knits from cutting them out to sewing it up. Thanks Angela for sharing your time and knowledge with us.Sharon Moore
I’m not a beginner but got a lot of tips and tricks out of this course….it sure makes my life easier. There’s something for everybody…..i can now cut the right way, sew with no pins, handle slippery and curly light weight knits etc etc…..i just loved this course!!! I especially apriciate the fact that there are no brand specific stiches and stuff so you can just use any machine you have. I recommend this fantastic course for anyone who want to tackle knits! Thanks Angela for putting in so much time and effort into these videos!Judith Van Hooijdonk
